He, however, admitted that he was unaware of Gowon’s personal efforts to secure his life until the revelation was made public.

It could be recalled that while speaking at the interdenominational Christmas Carol event organized by the Plateau State government, Gowon shared details of how he saved Obasanjo’s life.

According to him, he wrote a letter requesting clemency for Obasanjo, who was imprisoned over allegations of participating in an attempted coup.

Gowon stated that his appeal was motivated by a sense of duty and concern for justice, highlighting his role in advocating for Obasanjo’s life.

Reacting to this revelation, Obasanjo publicly expressed his appreciation, acknowledging that he had been unaware of Gowon’s intervention.

In a statement, Obasanjo said, “I want to acknowledge my boss, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he gave us here a revelation, and I have to thank you especially for that.

“When I came out of prison, I had the opportunity, both while I was in prison and after my release, of hearing about friends inside and outside who contributed to appeals and prayed for my release,” he added.

He further reflected on his gratitude towards those who supported him during his incarceration.

He said, “I went around the world, thanking those who had been pointed out to me as having appealed and prayed for my release from prison.

“I did not know that you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday. I thank you for that.”

It could be recalled that Obasanjo was sentenced to death in 1995 on charges of treason but was later released in 1998 following Abacha’s death.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
