Gen. Yakubu Gowon, the former head of state of Nigeria, has disclosed that he personally stepped in to stop former President Olusegun Obasanjo from being executed in 1995. Obasanjo was arrested in 1995 by General Sani Abacha, who accused him of plotting to overthrow his regime.
Following his arrest, Obasanjo was convicted and sentenced to death.
However, Gowon, who was deeply concerned about the situation, took action to ensure that the sentence was not carried out.
He wrote a letter to Abacha, urging him to use his leadership for good rather than evil. Gowon even sent his wife to deliver the letter to Abacha in the middle of the night, pleading with him to reconsider his decision.
Gowon expressed relief and joy when, following Abacha’s sudden death in 1998, Obasanjo was released after spending three years in prison.
Remarkably, Obasanjo went on to become Nigeria’s president in 1999.
Reflecting on the situation, Gowon attributed the outcome to the power of prayers and sincerity.
