The projected attempt by a group of people to install and inaugurate Iyalode of Oyo State has been described as illegal by Olubadan-In-Council members, who claim that the law is not aware of such a title. The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin, presided over a meeting when the council made this declaration. The event was held at Ibadan’s Olubadan Palace.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
Daily Post reported that during the two-hour meeting, other Olubadan-in-council members were present.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the council also asked market leaders to halt all other chieftaincy installations, especially the one scheduled for Thursday, November 28, 2024, at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, so that peace can prevail in Nigeria.
The council expressed disapproval of the widespread use of chieftaincy titles among traders in Ibadan. They further stated that proper recognition would only be granted to those who were installed with knowledge of the Olubadan palace.
They urged the market men and women in Ibadan to refrain from letting pointless squabbling over political positions interfere with their main duty of buying and selling in the city.
They stated, “Information brought to the attention of the Olubadan-in-council has it that some unscrupulous elements among the market leaders in the ancient city have perfected plans to install Iyalode of Oyo state. Iyalode is a traditional title that is not a toy in the hands of any group of people.”
“Such installation is illegal and unknown to Oyo State Chiefs Law 2000 and the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration. The appointment of Iyalode is an exclusive preserve of the people of the town under the leadership of their traditional ruler, who is the consenting and presiding authority.”
“Each town or city has its own Iyalode; that position is a traditional title that is peculiar to each town. It is not an honorary title that can be dashed out to anyone.
