Rivers State, despite being a statutory member of Ohaneze, has never led the organization.
During a meeting in Port Harcourt, key figures, including Livingstone Wechie (Convener of Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers) and Dr. Lucky A. Ekeji (President of Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo in Rivers), issued a statement asserting Rivers’ right to take the helm.
According to The Nation, they emphasized that according to the Ohaneze constitution, leadership should rotate among the seven states, and it is now Rivers’ turn.
The stakeholders, representing various local government areas in Rivers such as Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ikwerre, highlighted their previous contributions to Ohaneze, including producing key officials like the Deputy Secretary-General and National Financial Secretary.
They called for a free, fair, and transparent election for the President-General of Ohaneze, scheduled for January 2025.
Furthermore, the Pan-Igbo group Anyi Anyi, in collaboration with Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers, plans to host a symposium on December 7, 2024, to discuss leadership issues within Ohaneze.
