Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro during a meeting with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, Tinubu highlighted the plight of out-of-school children in Nigeria. He expressed his administration’s commitment to creating sustainable programs that will keep children in school despite the current economic challenges.
“We have too many children out of school, and we know that education is a way out of hunger and poverty,” the President said. “That is why we are designing ways and incentives to keep these children in school, and we need your support for these kids who want to stay in school.”
Tinubu acknowledged that the country’s ongoing economic reforms have strained the purchasing power of many families, making education inaccessible for some. However, he emphasized that his government is dedicated to bridging this gap through social safety nets and targeted investment in educational infrastructure.
The President called for collaboration between Nigerians, international partners, and institutions like the IMF to ensure that children remain in classrooms. He stressed that investing in education is a long-term solution to addressing poverty and fostering national development.
