The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has been contested by the Edo State House of Assembly over his decision to prohibit the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) from being used at voting places during the next gubernatorial election. According to Daily Post, the IGP had ordered the suspension of the ESSN’s activities on September 11, citing the need to ensure transparency in the gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21.
Egbetokun’s directive emphasized that election security responsibilities solely rest with the Police.
In response, Aiguobarueghian stated that only a court has the authority to order such a suspension and underscored the ESSN’s crucial role in maintaining security, particularly in rural areas.
She reaffirmed that the Edo State House of Assembly has the constitutional power to legislate on state security and peacekeeping matters.
Edo State, she noted, is among the few states with an internal community policing network designed to enhance local security.
