Maxwell Opara, a lawyer for the Nigeria Labour Congress, has claimed that NLC President Joe Ajaero was detained by the DSS while traveling to the UK to speak to fellow United Nations workers. He maintained that the DSS’s arrest gives foreign countries a bad impression of the nation. He also vented his annoyance at not being allowed to see Ajaero and the DSS telling them to leave. He claimed that Ajaero was being denied the right to represent himself with a lawyer of his choosing and voiced doubts regarding the legitimacy of the arrest and questioning procedure.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

He said in an interview with AIT, ”There is no synergy between the police and the DSS but that is not even the issue. Somebody was going on a National assignment to go and address the World. Joe Ajaero was to address workers from other nations in UK and you arrested him at the Airport. Do you know the image and the signal that you are sending about the country to other Nations?

When we got the information and we went to Labour house and they confirmed that it was the DSS that was behind it. And when we went to the DSS, they refused all access to see Ajaero. They said that we should go and that anytime they are ready, they will invite us. And we said are you going to interrogate Ajaero without a legal practitioner of his choice.
