One survivor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted how he narrowly escaped death. “I was lucky to come out of the mosque early. I saw them (insurgents) waiting, and one of them shouted that I should go back, but I ran away,” he said.

Another survivor, Mallam Ali Isiaka, lost his son in the attack. “I thank Allah for everything. I pray that the souls of the departed, including my son, rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said. Isiaka called on security agencies to provide protection for the community, which is mostly comprised of farmers and herders.

The attack is believed to be a reprisal by Boko Haram, who suspected that some members of the community had been providing information on their operations to security agencies. The insurgents had previously been raided by security operatives, resulting in the killing of a commander and other members.

The Yobe State government has condemned the attack and donated N30 million to the victims and their families. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Northern Governors’ Forum, and the military authorities have also denounced the attack, promising to deploy more soldiers to the area to counter the renewed Boko Haram attacks.

The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in Yobe State and the need for increased protection for communities vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The survivors’ accounts serve as a grim reminder of the brutality of Boko Haram and the urgent need for a comprehensive response to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
