A video captured demonstrators in Edo State stealing food during the most recent statewide demonstration against Nigeria’s economic difficulties. Nehikhare stated that the rice being looted in an interview with Channels TV was not provided by the federal government. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other religious institutions bought it. He stated that the Edo State government has given these organizations one billion naira to aid in the distribution of grains to those in need.
In Nehikhare’s words: “Edo State government did not buy any rice, the rice you saw in that video that was being looted is the rice purchased by CAN, the religious bodies who are the ones distributing rice after they received the sum of 1 billion naira from Edo State government.
