According Nigerian Tribune, Makinde said, “We don’t need the federal government to tell us what to do; we know what’s best for our people.” He added, “Constitutionally, the federal government is not superior to the state government; their jurisdictions are coordinate. So, we will continue to do what is right in Oyo State, as we have been doing.”

The governor’s comments come after the Supreme Court’s judgment granting autonomy to local government councils across the country.

Makinde noted that the judgment has created a lacuna between the decision and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He emphasized that the state government will address the challenges at the local government level and develop its own solutions to ensure seamless implementation of processes.

Makinde recalled that Oyo State has conducted local government elections twice since his administration began and that the Supreme Court has clarified that there are only 774 local governments in Nigeria.

He expressed confidence in the state government’s ability to make decisions that benefit its people, saying, “We are capable of making decisions that benefit our people.”

The governor’s statement is a response to sensational headlines that have proclaimed, “The governors’ hands have been tied; this is a first for Nigeria.” Makinde emphasized that the state government will continue to do what is right, as it has been doing, and will not be swayed by the federal government’s opinions.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
