Initially, the High Court in Port Harcourt had recognized Victor Oko-Jumbo as the Speaker, issuing an injunction against Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers from functioning in their roles.
According to The Nation, this decision prompted Amaewhule’s faction to seek redress at the Court of Appeal, appealing the injunction and seeking reinstatement.
The appellate court, comprising Justices Jimi Olukayode Bada, Hamma Akawu, and Balkisu Bello Aliyu, declined to stay the execution of the High Court’s order but opted to hear the case and provide a final judgment.
Pending the judgment, the court has instructed all parties involved to maintain the status quo.
The outcome of the appeal is expected to resolve the political unrest in Rivers State, particularly concerning the tenure of local government chairmen appointed during the disputed period.
