He explained that while Sango’s father was Yoruba, his mother hailed from Ibaripa in Nupe and named him ‘Sango,’ which is not a Yoruba name. He argued that this distinction disassociates Sango from the authentic Yoruba heritage. He further illustrated his point by mentioning the Ogun deity, who originated from Ekiti and never visited Iwo land. He questioned the rationale behind Iwo people worshipping Ogun.
He said in an interview with Punch, ”It is an insult for Yoruba Kings to worship Sango because his name is not linked to our origin. Sango’s father was Yoruba but his mother was from Ibaripa in Nupe, it was his mother who gave him the name ‘Sango.’ It’s not a Yoruba name.
