Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, issued a statement criticizing the stance of state governors.
He described their approach to determining workers’ wages as dictatorial.
He reminded the governors that the minimum wage is different from the individual pay structures of states.
These pay structures already reflect each state’s financial capabilities and circumstances.
He argued that allowing companies and organizations in Nigeria to pay workers whatever they like is similar to what the governors are proposing.
Upah stressed that, while companies may have different salary scales, they must adhere to the national wage floor.
The same principle, he insisted, should apply to state governors.
The NLC highlights the importance of a national minimum wage, stating that it is a tool that ensure fair and consistent pay across the country.
“The concept of a national minimum wage represents a national wage floor, a baseline below which no worker should be paid.“
“This double standard pits a few privileged individuals against the majority poor, which should concern anyone who loves this country.”
