In the midst of continuing discussions, governors guarantee labor and Nigerians a higher minimum wage.

Nigerians and labor unions have been reassured by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) that further negotiations will lead to an increase in the minimum wage. This comes after the governors first rejected the federal government’s proposal of N62,000, citing the necessity for some states to borrow money in order to match the suggested pay. An emergency meeting was convened by the governors after the Federal Executive Council postponed the minimum wage discussion to allow for broader consultations by President Bola Tinubu.

According to Punch, the NGF issued a communiqué after the meeting, extending into early Thursday, highlighting the issues discussed and the forum’s commitment to finding a mutually acceptable solution.

“The Forum received a presentation from the Minister of Women Affairs on the World Bank-Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up.

Members noted the importance of the project and emphasized the need to implement it at the state level as initially conceived,” the communiqué stated.

The governors reiterated their support for the Ministry of Women Affairs in promoting gender equality and advancing social development across Nigeria.
