In a video shared by Channels TV, Ekene said the Rivers State local government law states that elections for new council members can be held anytime within 90 days after the current members’ term ends. He said the law also allows the governor to set up a temporary caretaker committee to manage the local governments until new elections take place.
In Ekene’s words: “They took oath not to stay beyond 3 years so they should exit office. The way the law is now, elections were not expected to be conducted until after today. The Rivers State local government law 2018 that is the existing law now is to the effect that INEC shall conduct election anytime 90 days after the expiration of the term of the council in local government. That same law also permits the governor to constitute the caretaker committee to run the affairs of local governments pending the conduct of such election”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
