Last Monday, 35 members of the House of Representatives introduced the Bill that seeks to establish a single term of six years for both the president and state governors. The Bill also advocates for the rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones of the country, as well as the inclusion of a second vice president.

Dubbed ‘The Reformers’, the lawmakers presented the Bill at the National Assembly Complex, emphasizing that it is part of their legislative agenda. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo), a member of the group, highlighted that the proposed amendments aim to address various agitations across the nation, reduce the cost of governance, and foster unity.

If the Bill successfully becomes part of the ongoing constitutional review efforts, it would substitute the current system where public office holders are eligible for two terms of four years each, totaling eight years.

The Bill has caused unease within the House of Representatives, with some members opting not to comment on the matter when approached by Sunday Vanguard, citing its sensitive nature.

A Deputy Chairman of a Committee, who preferred not to be named, remarked, “I am not associated with that Bill, and any stance I have will be conveyed on the House floor.”

The proposal has elicited contrasting opinions among Nigerians. While some criticize the Bill, expressing concerns that it could exacerbate corruption, others endorse it, highlighting its potential benefits.
