Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka was advised by Yusuf Baba-Ahmed, the former Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate, not to use his intelligence to disparage other people, according to the Vanguard. Soyinka had previously claimed that Obi’s failure to control his supporters, who were attacking dissenting voices online, demonstrated his unsuitability for governing Nigeria. The acclaimed author also accused Obi of encouraging his followers, known as ‘Obidients,’ to launch online assaults against him and others with differing opinions.

In response, Baba-Ahmed described Soyinka’s remarks as a distraction and expressed his reluctance to engage in a direct conflict with him. Although Baba-Ahmed hinted that he had information that could permanently damage Soyinka’s reputation, he chose not to reveal it out of respect.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized that intellectual prowess should not be a tool for disparaging others, referencing Soyinka’s previous critical comments about the late General Abacha. He argued that it was unfair to malign Abacha, a military leader, based on intellectual differences. Baba-Ahmed suggested shifting the focus from individuals like Soyinka to more significant issues that deserve public attention.

Stressing the importance of mutual respect and personal dignity, Baba-Ahmed urged Soyinka to preserve his own prestige and not rely on Peter Obi or others to protect his honor.
