Wike, Atiku, and Others Present As PDP Opens NEC Meeting in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate from the previous election, Atiku Abubakar, his running mate Ifeanyi Okowa, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor Siminalaye Fubara are among the dignitaries present at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, according to Channels TV. For the first time since the 2023 election, every PDP leader has attended a party meeting, marking the 98th NEC. It’s happening at the Abuja PDP National Secretariat.

The choice of Atiku as the presidential candidate of the PDP tore the party in two, with Wike and some other then-serving governors forming a G-5 movement, insisting then that power must shift to the South, and significantly withdrawing their support for Atiku.

Ayu’s removal as PDP national chairman culminated from internal squabbles brought on by the party’s dismal result in the polls.

A year after the general election of 2023, that split is still haunting the party.

Recently, a few PDP members demanded that Umar Damagum, the party’s interim national chairman, step down.

The PDP is now experiencing a leadership crisis, and the newest demand to remove the Damagum-led NWC appears to be fracturing the party once again.

The board of trustees recommended the PDP to take the necessary action and appoint someone from the North-Central Zone to serve out the remaining term of the deposed Ayu, even if the party’s national caucus wanted the Damagum-led exco to continue at its meeting on Wednesday.

The BOT asked the party to make a decision about the national secretary and chairmanship of the organisation, citing the PDP as the source of some dissatisfaction.

At the start of the 98 NEC meeting, Damagun expressed optimism that the choices made will fortify the party.
