He pointed out that the tribal politics initiated by Nigeria’s founding fathers continues to influence contemporary political dynamics, leading to divisions along ethnic lines. Agu suggested that if the 1966 coup had not occurred, Nigeria’s political landscape might have evolved differently, potentially leading to a detribalized political space.
Agu highlighted a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history when compromise was made for the sake of national unity. He referenced how Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe stepped down in favor of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to assume leadership, illustrating the willingness to prioritize unity over tribal interests. Agu’s insights underscore the importance of transcending tribal politics and embracing a unified vision for Nigeria’s progress and prosperity.
He said: If the 1966 coup did not take place, Nigeria’s political space would have been detribalized. We won’t be practising rotation of presidency between the South and North which shows that Nigeria is not a united country. Even though Herbert Macaulay and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe formed the NCNC, Chief Obafemi Awolowo formed Action Group and Sir. Tafawa Balewa formed Northern People’s Congress (NPC), but when it became crucial that there must be compromise for the British colonial masters to hand power to us, Zik had to step down for Balewa to assume the leadership of Nigeria.
