The chairman of the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, discussed the tense relationship between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a live broadcast on Symfoni TV. Ihunwo alleged that the rift between Wike and Fubara stemmed from Wike’s desire to exert control over Fubara’s decisions, even in personal matters. According to the LGA chairman, Wike’s overbearing influence was a key factor in the breakdown of their relationship.
“For reconciliation, we have passed that stage of reconciliation because the man (Wike) that we are dealing with does not even have forgiving spirit,” Ihunwo said. “He is our brother, we have worked with him. If a man feels that he made you to be governor and he wants to control you to even extent of telling you not to sleep with your wife, that means there is crisis.”
Ihunwo’s remarks suggest that the personal and political dynamics between the former and current governors have become too complex to mend, with Wike’s alleged attempts to micromanage Fubara’s decisions seen as a significant barrier to reconciliation.
The Obio-Akpor LGA chairman emphasized that the focus should now be on finding ways for Rivers State to progress and move forward, despite the challenges posed by the ongoing rift between Wike and Fubara.
