Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has reacted to the controversial penalty by Julian Alvarez during their Champions League round of 16 clash with Atletico Madrid.
The Belgian shot-stopper believes that UEFA should not have taken such decision if they did not see the angles clearly.
Courtois, who was standing directly before Alvarez when the incident happened, could not give a clear account of what transpired but depended on UEFA’s judgement.
Julian Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out by VAR during the shootout against Real Madrid and Los Blancos went on to claim a 4-2 win over their rivals.
As he stepped forward to take the fourth kick for Atletic after all of Kylian Mbappe, Alexander Sorloth, and Jude Bellingham had scored theirs, the Argentine slipped just before he hit the ball.
He, however, managed to score but VAR called for a review of his penalty only to observe that the former Manchester City man’s standing foot had slightly hit the ball as he slipped, before he took the shot.
Asked to give his own account after Atletico Madrid boss, Diego Simeone had faulted the decision, Courtois said he was tired of people always criticising match officials.
He said, “We all know UEFA sees it clearly. I’m so tired of this victimhood with referees, of always crying about things like this”.
Real Madrid won the game 4-2 on penalty shootout and will now face Arsenal in the quarter finals of the competition in April.
