The Anambra State Government has officially scrapped the long-standing Monday sit-at-home, issuing a bold executive order requiring all schools and offices to operate fully on Mondays—or face severe salary penalties.
Signed by ASUBEB Board Secretary Loveline Mgbemena, the circular warns that teachers and staff who skip work on Mondays risk losing 20% of their pay—or their entire salary. The directive stems from a State Executive Council retreat chaired by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on January 21, 2026, and applies to all personnel across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Mgbemena instructed senior officials to enforce compliance strictly, making it clear that this is a non-negotiable executive decision.
The Monday sit-at-home practice, which has disrupted schools and businesses in Anambra and other South-East states since August 2021, was originally enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as part of their campaign for the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Now, after nearly five years, the lockdowns are officially over—and workers are being told it’s time to get back to business.
