An Asian man has shared how the Nigeria Police Force Complaint Response Unit (CRU) helped him recover N150,000 allegedly extorted by a police officer in Lagos.
In a video circulating online, the man recounted that the incident happened on Friday night in Ikeja while he was heading to a bar with a friend to watch the Nigeria vs. Morocco football match. Their Uber was stopped on a bridge, and he was asked to present his passport and visa.
Unable to provide his passport immediately, he had staff send him pictures of the documents. However, the officers allegedly became hostile, pulled him out of the car, threatened him with weapons, and demanded money. He ultimately transferred N150,000 to them under duress.
After confirming his legal status, he contacted the CRU, submitting an email with evidence, including transfer records and visa documents. Officials responded within hours and requested additional details to investigate the matter.
He praised CRU officer Anthony Chukuma and the DPO of Ikeja Division, Akin Umi, for their professionalism and swift action. Following their intervention, the N150,000 was refunded to his bank account on Monday morning.
The man expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting how prompt and transparent action from the CRU helped restore his trust in the system.
