There was no reason to lose – Arteta blasts Arsenal players after 1-1 draw with Man Utd

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told his players they must perform better following a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Sunday.

Declan Rice struck in the second half to cancel out Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick.

The result leaves the Gunners 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, although they have one game in hand.

“When we had the first half that we had, where we were exceptional, we didn’t test the keeper,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“We had some unbelievable situations, but we didn’t get the final shot or the last pass.

“We didn’t capitalise, we rushed the game, we started to lose duels, and we could have ended up losing it.”

On Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal, he added: “Sometimes that is what is missing.

“The execution has to reach the right player, and the right player has to take the shot. How we conceded chances in certain moments was not acceptable.

“They have so much quality, and they pick the right player, which normally ends in a goal.

“We opened the gate to lose the game. There was no reason to lose, but we opened it ourselves. I will defend my players all the time, but in those moments, we have to do better.”
