BREAKING: Governor Frees First AAU Students Arrested in Violent Anti-Kidnapping Protest

The first wave of Ambrose Alli University students detained after a recent protest against kidnapping in Ekpoma, Edo State, has been released from police custody.

This follows a directive from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who ordered the release of any “genuine students” among the 52 individuals arrested last weekend. The initially peaceful demonstration against rising insecurity had escalated into violence, resulting in property damage and looting.

Public pressure mounted after allegations surfaced that police had entered a university hostel to make arrests. Responding to the outcry, the Governor intervened.

Seven AAU students were freed on Tuesday night, with state officials confirming that others still detained would be released progressively. The move aims to de-escalate tensions while authorities continue to investigate the violent incidents that marred the protest.
