“Cracks in the House” — More Rivers Lawmakers Move to Halt Fubara’s Impeachment

Fresh tension is brewing inside the Rivers State House of Assembly as more lawmakers openly oppose the ongoing move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

Two legislators — Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II — have now joined the growing list of voices calling for the impeachment process to be dropped. Their appeal comes just days after two other lawmakers, Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo and Peter Abbey, publicly broke ranks with their colleagues and urged restraint.

At a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the dissenting lawmakers made it clear that dialogue and reconciliation should take priority over drastic political action. Nwankwo, who also serves as the Minority Leader and represents Omuma Constituency, revealed that respected leaders from within and outside Rivers State had reached out, urging the Assembly to handle the crisis with wisdom and moderation.

Peter Abbey, the lawmaker representing Degema Constituency, admitted that while the governor may have made constitutional missteps, such errors should not automatically lead to impeachment. He argued that mistakes can happen in governance and that what matters most is ensuring they are corrected and not repeated.

With more lawmakers stepping forward to resist the impeachment drive, the political drama in Rivers State appears far from settled — but the growing calls for peace suggest that a compromise may still be within reach.
