Strong evidence suggests that those loyal to former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa are planning to unseat Speaker Mojisola Meranda. According to Vanguard, the latest strategy involves installing a lawmaker from the Ikeja constituency as a temporary Speaker, who would later step down to pave the way for Obasa’s return.
Some lawmakers and party leaders, however, remain loyal to Meranda and have resisted these moves.
A prominent APC chieftain criticized Abuja’s influence in the matter, questioning why lawmakers in Lagos should seek approval from the central government.
He also accused Obasa of financial misconduct, including improper deductions from staff allowances.
Political analyst Benjamin Mokwunye noted that the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), though extra-constitutional, played a role in Obasa’s removal and later endorsed Meranda’s leadership.
While a few GAC members have opposed Obasa’s ousting, most party leaders have accepted the decision.
Public critics warn that reinstating Obasa could destabilize the party, given allegations of financial mismanagement and misconduct against him.
They argue that democratic procedures were followed in his removal, and attempts to reverse it would only alienate party members.
