Fubara’s Comment:I’m An Authentic Legal Luminary, And I Have Been At The Bar For 46 Years–According to OCJ Okocha

Former Nigerian Bar Association President and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, OCJ Okocha, voiced his extreme disapproval of a recent remark made by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The governor’s remarks, which disparaged a few “so-called legal luminaries” without mentioning any names, infuriated Okocha, who thought the statement was a disrespect to respected members of the legal community. With more than forty years of expertise, Okocha thought it especially offensive that there was no direct recognition, considering his substantial contributions to the legal profession.CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

During a live coverage by TVC, Okocha reflected on his career, emphasizing the breadth of his experience and the respect he has garnered within the legal community. He noted that he has not only served as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in Rivers State but also held various prestigious national legal positions.

In recounting his professional journey, Okocha highlighted that he was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1995, a recognition reserved for the most distinguished legal practitioners in the country. He further mentioned his tenure as President of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2000, showcasing his leadership and influence within the legal community over the years. These positions, he argued, cement his status as an “authentic legal luminary.”

The legal veteran expressed his hurt at being indirectly targeted by the governor’s remarks, feeling that his contributions to the profession were being undermined. Without a specific name being mentioned, Okocha was left to interpret the comment as possibly being directed toward him and other senior legal practitioners. This ambiguity, he felt, cast a shadow over those who have worked diligently to uphold the rule of law.

Okocha also shared that it was his colleague, Chief Frank, who sent him clips of public discussions rising in defense of legal practitioners who might have been referenced in the governor’s comments. He was gratified to see that others were recognizing the contributions of experienced lawyers and defending their integrity against the vague criticism.

He said, ”You know, in one or two days, a lot of difference can happen in the landscape. I am an authentic legal luminary, and I have been at the bar for 46 years.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
