Mystery Missile Found in Niger Forest Sparks Police Probe

Security agencies in Niger State have launched an investigation after a suspected military unexploded ordnance was discovered in a forested area of Zugurma community, Mashegu Local Government Area.

The device was reportedly sighted by local farmers on Monday, January 5, prompting an immediate security response. Police operatives quickly moved to the location and sealed off the area to prevent harm to residents.

According to the state police command, a specialized Explosive Ordnance Disposal and CBRN unit was deployed early the following day. With guidance from community members, the team accessed the site and safely neutralized the object.

Authorities later confirmed that the item was an unexploded military missile, though its origin remains unclear. The recovered device has since been transferred to the state police headquarters in Minna for further examination.

Police officials assured residents that investigations are ongoing to determine how the ordnance ended up in the community. They also appealed for calm, stressing that security agencies are working together to maintain safety and prevent any threat to lives or property.
