Speaking in an interview with PUNCH Metro on Sunday, Areola claimed that the monarch had threatened to kill him following a widely circulated video showing him being repeatedly assaulted and humiliated on the street. The attack is reportedly linked to a chieftaincy dispute.
Despite the monarch denying involvement in the video, sources within the community, the victim himself, and Emmanuel Ojo, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, identified him as the person in the footage.
In the video, one of the monarch’s aides was seen snatching Areola’s cap as he knelt in confusion, while another struck him from behind. Despite his attempts to ask what he had done wrong, the elderly man was met with further humiliation.
Expressing his distress in Yoruba, Areola was heard saying, “I’m not feeling well,” to which the monarch reportedly responded, “Die if you want to die. We will bury you, and nobody will know.”
During his interview, Areola stated that he was still unaware of what offense he had committed and pleaded for public intervention and protection.
However, during a phone conversation with The Punch correspondent, the monarch denied the accusation, as he expressed frustration over the numerous petitions he had received from all sides regarding the incident.
He said, “I’m not familiar with the video you’re referring to. I’ve been receiving numerous calls for the past three weeks regarding it.”
Further talking, he said, “They’ve also submitted petitions to various authorities, including Alagbon, the Zone 2 Command, and the state governor. A newspaper has published a statement confirming that I am not the person in the video.”CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
