The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its Kano State Executive, along with all local government and ward leaders, ahead of the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, announced the decision in a statement on Friday, noting that the party plans to set up a caretaker committee in the coming days.
The move comes amid a political crisis between NNPP National Leader and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf, who is reportedly close to joining the APC—a step strongly opposed by Kwankwaso.
The Kano State chapter of the APC has confirmed that Yusuf is expected to formally join the party within a few days.
Johnson emphasised that the dissolution was carried out in line with the party’s constitution.
He said, “The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, after an emergency meeting, has, in accordance with the constitution of the party, announced the dissolution of its Executive Committees at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels in Kano State.
“In line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the NWC resolved to appoint Caretaker Committees to act in the interim. Further instructions will be announced in due course.
“The NWC accordingly thanked all those who held positions at the State, Local Government, and Ward structures of the party in Kano State and assured them of the party’s appreciation for their invaluable contributions.”
