A major political shift has hit Enugu State following the resignation of a long-standing chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Princess Adaku Ogbu Aguocha, popularly known as Ada Ogbu, has formally withdrawn her membership from the APC.
She is a former senatorial candidate of the party and one of its most recognisable figures in Enugu State.
Her resignation ends a 14-year stay in the party.
The decision was communicated in a written letter dated December 30, 2025. The letter was addressed to the APC Caretaker Ward Chairman of Nara Ward I in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. Party members in the state received the news with surprise.
In the letter, Ada Ogbu stated that her decision to leave the APC was based on “evolving realities”. She explained that the move followed careful reflection on how best to serve her people at this stage of her political journey. She described the step as difficult but necessary.
She further disclosed that she consulted widely before taking the decision.
According to her, discussions were held with family members, close friends, and political associates. She stressed that the outcome was a deliberate choice and not an impulsive action.
Ada Ogbu has been one of the most visible faces of the APC in Enugu State.
She joined the party during its early formation and remained active through periods when the APC struggled for acceptance in the South-East. She was also among the first Enugu indigenes to align with the party.
Over the years, she served as a grassroots mobiliser and party organiser. She consistently promoted the APC’s ideology at ward, local government, and state levels.
Her activities helped sustain the party’s structure in parts of Enugu State.
Her political profile rose further when she emerged as the APC’s senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District. That contest made her one of the party’s leading standard-bearers in the zone, despite the party’s limited influence in the area.
In her resignation letter, Ada Ogbu expressed appreciation to the APC for the opportunities she was given.
She noted that her years in the party exposed her to leadership responsibilities and deepened her understanding of public service and democracy.
She maintained a calm and respectful tone throughout the letter. She thanked party leaders, members, and supporters she worked with over the years. She also made it clear that her exit should not be seen as a personal attack on individuals within the party.
The resignation has sparked political conversations across Enugu State. This is largely due to its coincidence with growing realignments involving supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who is now linked with the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Ada Ogbu’s decision came on the same day Peter Obi is expected to publicly collect his ADC membership card in Enugu State. The development has intensified speculation about a possible wave of defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Although Ada Ogbu did not announce her next political destination in her letter, observers believe her move places her among key figures being closely watched. Many see her as a potential entrant into the emerging ADC-led opposition bloc.
Enugu State has remained largely resistant to the APC over the years. The state is also viewed as symbolic terrain for any opposition movement seeking strength in the South-East. Ada Ogbu’s resignation adds weight to the ongoing political recalibration in the region.
As at the time of filing this report, she has not made any public declaration of joining another party. Her camp has also remained silent on future political plans.
