“Step In Now” — APC Pressure Group Warns Against Rivers Impeachment Crisis

A support group within the All Progressives Congress, APC Progressive Mandate Group, has appealed to the National Assembly to urgently halt the impeachment process initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, describing it as unlawful, politically driven, and a threat to stability.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by its coordinator, Ayodele Alonge, the group condemned the action of the Rivers State House of Assembly, arguing that the process lacks constitutional merit and risks reopening political wounds that were previously healed through presidential intervention.

According to the group, the impeachment attempt contradicts the peace agreement personally facilitated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which helped defuse tensions between Governor Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the state legislature. They warned that proceeding with impeachment would amount to a direct disregard for the President’s reconciliatory efforts.

The Assembly had accused the governor of several infractions, including spending outside budgetary approvals, demolishing the Assembly complex, withholding statutory funds, and allegedly ignoring judicial directives on legislative autonomy. Similar accusations were also levelled against the deputy governor.

However, the APC group countered that many of these claims are built on shaky legal foundations, particularly the issue surrounding the state budget passed during a period of emergency rule, which they insist the Assembly has no authority to weaponise against the governor.

The group also highlighted that Governor Fubara’s recent move from the PDP to the APC in December 2025 has strengthened the ruling party’s influence in Rivers State, triggering multiple defections, including lawmakers at the federal level. They argued that the impeachment push threatens to reverse these political gains and weaken the party’s expanding foothold in the state.

Further accusing Minister Nyesom Wike and allied lawmakers of orchestrating the crisis, the group claimed the impeachment is less about accountability and more about political retaliation. They insisted that ongoing efforts to portray Fubara as the source of instability ignore the role of entrenched interests seeking to disrupt governance for personal ambition.

The group urged the National Assembly to act decisively, warning that allowing the impeachment to proceed could set a dangerous national precedent. They also called for an immediate suspension of the process and a public acknowledgment of President Tinubu’s role in restoring calm to Rivers State.

According to the group, preserving constitutional order and political reconciliation is essential to safeguarding democracy, not just in Rivers State, but across the country.
