JUST IN: NNPP Appoints Governor Yusuf as National Leader after Suspension

New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has named Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as its new National Leader, days after lifting the indefinite suspension earlier placed on him by the party.

This decision marks a major shift within the NNPP’s internal leadership structure and places Governor Yusuf at the highest elected position on the party’s platform as preparations quietly begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party confirmed that the suspension, which was imposed in 2025, was lifted after an internal review of allegations of misconduct brought against the governor.

The claims were said to be connected to lingering tensions involving Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his supporters within the party.

According to the NNPP, a special committee was constituted to look into the matter. The panel submitted its report after concluding its assignment, prompting the party leadership to reconsider the earlier decision against the Kano governor.

Following deliberations, the National Working Committee (NWC), in consultation with the party’s Founder and the Board of Trustees, reached a unanimous resolution during an emergency meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

As part of the resolution, the NNPP announced the full restoration of Governor Yusuf’s rights and privileges as a party member.

The party went further to elevate him to the position of National Leader, describing the role as the most senior elected office within its political structure.

The party leadership urged Governor Yusuf to use the new position to strengthen internal unity, expand the party’s national reach, and build on existing political gains as the NNPP positions itself for future electoral contests.

In the statement, the NNPP praised the governor for what it described as his courage and resilience, noting that he stood firm against what the party referred to as “imaginary powers” during the period of crisis.

The party also restated its stance on the earlier expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwassiya movement, insisting that its decisions were final and in line with the party’s constitution.

The announcement was formally endorsed by the NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major.
