Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed the root of his disagreement with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, saying it centres on Wike’s political stance ahead of the 2027 elections.
Makinde made this known on Tuesday during a media chat with selected journalists.
He explained that the issue arose during a meeting he attended with President Bola Tinubu and Wike, which was also witnessed by the President’s Chief of Staff.
According to the governor, Wike openly declared during the meeting that he would deliver the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, a statement Makinde said left him shocked.
“I don’t have personal issues with anybody. I don’t beef anyone,” Makinde said, dismissing claims of personal rivalry between him and the former Rivers State governor.
He recalled confronting Wike after the meeting, questioning whether such a position had been jointly agreed upon.
“Wike wants to support the President in the 2027 elections. That is his right,” Makinde said, adding that his concern was about the future of democracy and the survival of opposition politics in Nigeria.
The Oyo governor stressed that some leaders within the PDP are committed to ensuring the party remains strong and that Nigeria does not slide into a one-party state.
“Some of us want to ensure that democracy survives in Nigeria and that the PDP also survives,” he said.
