A fresh wave of political support is building in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections, as some serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly have thrown their weight behind the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, for the governorship race.
The lawmakers, drawn from different Assemblies dating back to 1999, visited the Deputy Senate President during a courtesy call led by former Speaker Abdulaziz G. Gafasa.
According to the lawmakers, their mission was clear and they want Barau to run for the top job in the state.
In a message shared by his media team, the group did not mince words. “They described Senator Barau as the most marketable candidate for the All Progressives Congress in the state,” the statement noted.
Barau has not formally announced his interest in the 2027 governorship election. Even so, his name continues to surface in political discussions across the APC in Kano.
Many party stakeholders believe his long track record at the National Assembly has positioned him as a strong contender.
During the visit, the former Speaker highlighted why the group is backing him. He said Barau’s influence cuts across all zones of Kano.
He added that the Deputy Senate President has contributed to the welfare of party members and residents, regardless of political or senatorial differences. “This has made you the most marketable candidate in APC,” he said.
A serving lawmaker, Garba Yau Gwarmai of Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency, echoed the same sentiment. He pledged that they would mobilise support for Barau at the grassroots ahead of 2027.
“This endorsement is based on your track record of outstanding service over the years,” he told him.
In his response, Senator Barau thanked them for the gesture and urged the group to remain committed to rebuilding Kano.
He stressed the need for unity within the APC and called for renewed efforts to restore what he described as the “glorious days” of the state.
Barau also encouraged the lawmakers to continue promoting the agenda of the APC and President Bola Tinubu, saying the state needs experienced hands to correct what he called years of misgovernance.
He added that rescuing Kano would require teamwork, sacrifice, and a collective push towards a common goal.
